Community - The Give & Grow at Makeway

The Give and Grow at Makeway

At The Give and Grow, all that we do has to make sense. Making sense to us means coming from a genuine place where connection, community, and creativity meet. When Makeway approached us to be the first retailer to house our basketball planters, it automatically made sense.

Makeway is the first-of-its-kind store in Toronto. Located at Stackt Market on Bathurst Street, Makeway is a sneaker and streetwear culture boutique for women, by women.

Historically, the sneaker and streetwear industry has been geared towards men. However, in today's age, women have cultivated and become trailblazers in this space. Yet, stores that "cater" to this community often allocate little to no area for women's sneakers and fashion. Makeway co-owners Abby Albino and Shelby Weaver changed the game by creating a space exclusively dedicated to making sneaker culture accessible for women.

It's fair to say that basketball and sneakers go hand in hand. Some of the most coveted pairs of sneakers come from basketball culture and players. Consider the Jordan Sneakers; do we need to say more? Implementing our NBA themed basketball planters at Makeway was a seamless fit.

From their soft open leading to the days of their grand opening, we completely sold out planters at Makeway. So much so, extra planters were personally delivered to the store to meet demands. Yes, this was beyond exciting for us all.

Still, perhaps the most special part of this venture was three businesswomen coming together to serve our community's needs. We are thankful to have women such as Shelby and Abby who continue to help push the narrative that women can disrupt the status quo, break down barriers, and create access and opportunities. It's a reminder to all women if we don't do what we believe in, then who will? Let us continue to deconstruct expectations of women.
